Golf Courses & Clubs

Conwy Golf Club is the must play golf course on the North Wales coast and the first Open Qualifying venue in Wales. Over the past four years, Conwy has hosted the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open, the prestigious European Amateur Team Championship during July 2009 and the S4/C Wales Ladies Championship of Europe in August 2010. The Vale of Llangollen Golf Club nestling on the banks of the River Dee and overlooked by the glorious Welsh hills this Championship course with its manicured fairways and superb greens, attracts golfers from far afield. One of only a handful of Welsh courses that holds the HSBC Gold Medal ranking, it is a highly favoured venue for many of the County, Professional and Welsh Amateur events. This Championship course offers a great test of golf amidst a spectacular setting.

Holyhead Golf Course is located on the stunningly beautiful Isle of Anglesey, the course measures just over 6,000 yards in length from the back tees ( 6090 yards, par 71. 5208 yards, par 72 for the ladies ). Moreover, from a distance, it looks relatively tame with only one serious hill to negotiate. Look a little closer however, and you will soon realise that not only are the fairways extremely narrow and quite undulating but the rough comprises of much gorse, heather and bracken giving rise to all kinds of challenges.

Prestatyn Golf Course is ball-losing distance from the Irish Sea. It’s mostly flat, so it’s easy walking. However it’s also one of the longest 18 hole tracks in North Wales – measuring over 6,800 yards from the championship tees. So you might want to get your pedometer out. Established in 1905 along the rolling sands of Gronant dunes, one of the toughest holes is the dogleg 3rd, aptly named ‘Round the Bend’. Prevailing south-westerly winds regularly make an appearance at Prestatyn, so you’ll want to pack your low shots. Reward yourself with a drink in the Clubhouse in the knowledge that you’ve just played one of the most northerly courses in Wales. Maesdu Golf Course is a 18 varied holes across parkland and links. The course was designed by James Braid, who was also behind the King’s and Queen’s course at Gleneagles. And it’s where Ian Woosnam played in the Welsh Boys’ Championship in 1974.

More than you can shake a stick at!

Abergele Golf Course the delightful 18 hole Parkland Course boast many enviable features. The course was established in its present position in 1968 to the historic grounds of Gwyrch Castle with magnificent coastal views. The club has maintained its reputation by ensuring that innovative enhancements are made at every opportunity. This is clearly highlighted by the completion of a huge project which involved the construction of new greens to the latest USGA standards in 2001.

North Wales (Llandudno) Golf Course is a true links course of championship standard, played out alongside the magnificent scenery of the North Wales Coast. Expect some tricky par 3’s including the famously named ‘O.L.’ and ‘L.O.’ where a par will feel like a birdie. The 8th is a great links hole, especially when there’s a stiff breeze from the beach. This is also the club where a young Tony Jacklin had lessons during his summer holiday and reduced his handicap from 17 to 1.

Penmaenmawr Golf Course is one of North Wales best 9 Hole Golf Courses (with 18 tees). With three mountains surrounding as a back drop and the coastline in front, the course is as challenging in golf as it is stimulating in scenic beauty is set up for all levels of golfers, from low handicap players, medium handicap players and beginners and on its day can be forgiving as well as providing a real challenge to all.
